Board chair Ray Lepp, president Doug Berg and academic dean Ben Wohlgemut represented Bethany before the Commission on Accreditation at the annual meeting of AABC Feb. 14-18.
The primary benefit of the renewed status for Bethany is the association's assistance in strategic planning and ongoing self-evaluation.
A secondary but more immediate benefit is that Bethany graduates can transfer selected courses taken at Bethany into programs at other colleges and a growing number of universities, even with Bethany at candidate status.
Despite 10 years of not affiliating with AABC, Bethany was granted the pre-accredited candidate status because it showed promise in achieving accreditation within four years. It is the middle step of a three-level process. Bethany was able to bypass applicant status because of substantial progress toward meeting the criteria for accreditation.
Bethany voluntarily withdrew from a previous pursuit of accreditation with AABC in 1986 because the goals of the school and the accrediting agency seemed to be heading in different directions. The present board and constituency of Bethany have strongly affirmed the pursuit of accreditation as the criteria of AABC are seen to be in line with Bethany's current goals.
