John E. Toews installed as president

Waterloo, Ont.

On April 21, educator and New Testament scholar John E. Toews was installed as the fifth president of Conrad Grebel College. The service of installation featured an address, "The Old and the New", by Toews. His framing question: "What will be the shape of the second generation at Conrad Grebel College?" He identified Conrad Grebel as a "unique treasure", one of the best educational options in North America today for Mennonite students, in its setting as a small Christian college affiliated with a renowned Canadian university.

"New times, however, require a reframing of the old," said Toews. He underscored his desire that the College, while remaining committed to innovation, turn more deliberately towards the Mennonite churches that nurtured it into bring.

Toews came to Conrad Grebel from MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno, CA, where he was professor of New Testament. He previously served as assistant professor of religious studies at Conrad Grebel from 1970 to 1973, and as dean of academic affairs.

Conrad Grebel is a teaching program at the University of Waterloo, as well as a residence for 113 young women and men. Conrad Grebel students are registered in all six faculties of the university.
