One went to Fred Koop, who does layout and design for MBH in the category of full colour front cover design (Spring/Summer Encounter). The cover featured a textured photo by Wally Schmidt of a surrealistic sculpture depicting a figure reaching upwards. The judge wrote, "This cover is very powerful. It has a mystical quality".
The other award went to editorial assistant Kevin Heinrichs in the category of "Treatment of a News Event (magazines)" for the feature, "Stirring Men's Hearts" (September 29, 1995). The main article profiled the US-based Promise Keepers movement; sidebars included information on other men's ministries and Promise Keepers in Canada. The judge's comments included, "Excellent, lots of colour, has depth."
Anglican Journal won first prize in the General Excellence category for national publications; honourable mention went to Catholic New Times and Mennonite Reporter.
The General Excellence Award for denominational and interdenominational general interest magazines and journals was won by Faith Today, a publication of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada.
More than 460 submissions from over 70 Christian publications in Canada were judged by 13 professionals from across Canada. Canadian Church Press is an association of church-related periodicals.
