Women meet over lunch

Between 80 and 85 women met at the Friday lunch hour for a time of fellowship and encouragement. The meeting, sponsored by the Women's Network Steering Committee, featured reports on the ministry of four women in their local churches. Elfrieda Duerksen from River East MB Church in Winnipeg spoke about her ministry of encouragement. Marie Speiser of Forest Grove Community Church, Saskatoon, talked about the ESL classes she and her husband Larry teach at their church. They had felt called to go into mission work after their retirement from teaching, but as they prayed for direction for the country to which they should go, they found the opportunities to reach out to people from different countries right at their doorstep.

Naomi Enns from Saanich Community Church, Victoria, B.C., spoke about learning from Jesus to lean on others, and then being available for others to lean on. Even when others' needs come at an awkward time, having the gift of being a lean-to is a sacred gift, and, as such, needs to be used.

Lorraine Dick completed the session by telling how she had been called to ministry. She said she fell in love with the church when she was in Brazil on a Christian service assignment, and from there went on to serve in a number of churches, first as secretary, and then as associate pastor in the field of Christian education.
