BC golfers tee off for MBM/S

Chilliwack, B.C.

Seventy-six golfers toured--or hacked--their way around the Royalwood Golf Course in Chilliwack, B.C. on July 20, as they participated in the second annual MBM/S Golf Classic.

While all participants made personal contributions to Mennonite Brethren Missions/Services, some, like Henry Funk, collected pledges from friends and colleagues. By bringing $800 in donations, Funk, a former conference stewardship representative, won two tickets to a Vancouver Canucks game next season.

According to Steve Klassen, who organized the event, MBM/S netted over $5000. The funds will help support Youth Mission International (YMI), the short-term outreach ministry sponsored by MBM/S, Canadian Evangelism Board and Mission USA.

Mission USA Executive Director, Ed Boschman, and other conference leaders participated in the event.

After 18 holes, the golfers enjoyed barbecued hamburgers in a park decorated with flowers, balloons, and YMI posters. Each table featured an MBM/S bottle bank, which collected about $200. Merlin Enns and Nancy Boese coordinated the meal and decorations, and YMI alumni served the participants.

When Abe and Susan Hiebert's name was drawn from a golf bag, they won a trip to Japan, where they will spend a week or more with MBM/S missionaries Laurence and Leona Hiebert. They plan to go in January.

After lunch, YMI founder/director, Randy Friesen, challenged the group to be gripped by the devastating spiritual needs of young people today--especially how they need to get right with God. Friesen urged the audience to make a difference through getting involved or supporting ministries like YMI and MBM/S.

Encouraged by this year's turnout, Klassen has already begun working on next year's game. He plans to invite at least 300 people.

"This kind of event," Klassen said, "reaches and enthuses a wide spectrum of guys, including some of the younger generation who may not know much about MBM/S or YMI. Everybody tells me, 'we've got to do this again.'"
