MEI continues expansion

About 1500 people attended Mennonite Education Institute's opening ceremony Sept. 29. It featured the MEI bands, mass choir, concert choir and chamber singers. Dedication prayers were said by Hugo Friesen, past principal and teacher at MEI.

Enrollment this year for kindergarten to grade 4 is 131 students; grades 8-12, 816 students, totalling 947 students. This is an increase of 30 students over last year. In the elementary school, 83 students (63%) are from affiliated Mennonite churches; 49 (37%) are from non-society churches. In the secondary school, 495 students are from affiliated Mennonite churches, 324 (40%) are from non-society churches.

Future plans are to build a new elementary school on the current MEI campus to be ready for September, 1997. Projected enrollment is 400 students from grades K-7. There will be 14 classrooms plus a library, gymnasium, computer lab, offices and a music room.
