Learning

The summer of 1996 opened my eyes to the hearts of church leaders in the Maritime provinces. My first impression of the MB pastors in the Maritimes was humility. They did not tell us everything was fine. Rather, on the first day, they told us their struggles and how we could pray for them.

My second impression was that the pastors were passionate prayer warriors. Their prayers restored, motivated and healed us. Their prayers were personal and full of passion.

My third impression was their determination. The pastors are ministering to people who have been on the streets, who then choose to go to church but fall back to the streets--the pastors never gave up on old acquaintances, and they never ceased to make new acquaintances.

I also learned three important principles. The first is the definition of church. In Dartmouth, N.S., our team presented the church service, but then individuals in the congregation stood up and spoke. As we looked back, we realized everyone in the church had contributed something to what God had done that morning. That is what the church is about--everyone ministering using their gifts and talents. The second principle is the definition of missions. The Maritime church leaders invited youth to play basketball, play Ping-Pong and just hang out. They were involved in soup kitchens and fun activities for everyone in the community. Mission is about serving others and remaining faithful in relationships.

The third principle is reaching out. Before the mission, I tried serving God by doing what is right. I did not associate with sinners. Now I know that I need to serve God by reaching out to sinners and to realize my own sinfulness. I must see others through Jesus' eyes.
