A certified management consultant, Cornelius has been working in the area of international relief and development for the past 15 years. Cornelius is currently working with Canadian Foodgrains Bank in Asmara, Eritrea where he is project advisor for the Eritrea Disaster Mitigation project, a three-year consultancy partnership aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Eritrean Grain Board to establish and operate a national food reserve, monitor food markets and manage food aid monetization.
Prior to his work in Eritrea, Cornelius spent several years as a management consultant specializing in international development. In this capacity, he worked with a number of private businesses, government departments and NGOs. He holds a B.A. from York University in Toronto and undertook graduate studies in international affairs (development) at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa.
Cornelius plans to spend some time in Canada during February and then return to his family in Eritrea to make the transition to Winnipeg. He replaces Al Doerksen who left CFGB in September after six years as executive director. Interim executive director Ray Elgersma took over Oct. 1, 1996 and will continue until Jan. 31, 1997. Prior to his appointment, Elgersma had served as executive director of Christian Reformed World Relief Committee since 1989.
Formed in 1983, the Winnipeg-based Canadian Foodgrains Bank is a church-based agency that provides food and development assistance to countries in need. It is comprised of 13 church partners including Mennonite Central Committee Canada.
