Reflections on John 1:14; Isaiah 41:10

Perception

My young son and I were standing in our backyard, marvelling at the vast star-studded dome above us.

"Mommy, are there holes in the sky?"

How different things can be perceived! My child saw only a dark canopy with a great light beyond and many pinpoints of brilliance shining through.

Is that how our heavenly Father has shown Himself? Has He limited His revelation, offering us only a pinpoint of light now and then?

The apostle John says the disciples had seen God's glory "the glory of the One and only Son who came from the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). In Jesus dwells all the fullness of the Godhead (Colossians 2:9). To be sure, our hearts have been darkened by sin so that our vision is obscured, but God's brilliance can penetrate any heart that opens itself up to Him.

And how does God view us? Is He restricted? Does He catch only an occasional glimpse of what goes on on earth? Is He so far removed from us that He is not aware of our needs and our inability to cope alone?

Ah, the Almighty, who has enveloped the whole universe in His hand, has called you and me by name. We may have a fragmented view of Him, but He sees and knows fully what we are going through, and He has promised not to forsake us (Isaiah 41:10).
