Ontario senior honoured by province

St. Catharines, Ont.

Jacob Kutz of St. Catharines, Ont. was one of 19 seniors to receive an Ontario Senior Achievement Award. The awards were presented Nov. 29 in the Legislature building at Queen's Park in Toronto by Cam Jackson, minister responsible for seniors and Lieutenant-Governor Henry N.R. Jackman.

Kutz retired in his 80s. When he was 90, he moved to Tabor Manor and began looking for community service opportunities. He discovered that the school across the street from his new home needed someone who could help school age immigrants with language skills. Because he is fluent in English, German and Russian, he received the job. He volunteers an hour-and-a-half every day to help out the children with language training.

He also does volunteer work within Tabor Home, assisting other residents. When school is out for the summer, he teaches a vacation Bible school program.
