Jacob G. Braun

Jacob G. Braun passed away Oct. 19. He was born Nov. 27, 1910 to Gerhard G. and Margarita Braun in southern Russia. The family moved to Siberia, but returned to Neuendorf, where his father became the village policeman. In 1923, the family immigrated to Winkler, Man. where they farmed. He earned a reputation as a hard worker and a good farmer with a special way with animals. He learned quickly and was good at carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring and some veterinary work. He realized his need of a Saviour during catechism classes and was baptized in May, 1931, joining Sommerfelder Mennonite Church. He began working for Jacob Wiebe in Kronsgart, Man. After 2 years, he married Wiebe's daughter Tina May 12, 1940. They farmed in Bloomfield, Man. for over 30 years, moving to Winkler in 1974. He was a school trustee, a trustee at Kronsgart MB Church and a member of the finance committee of Plum Coulee Credit Union. He was later a trustee at Winkler MB Church. His family was always important to him; he helped the children and cared for Tina in her struggle with arthritis. After suffering a stroke in January, 1996, he moved into Salem Home in June. He is mourned by wife Tina; children Walter of Morden, Wilma Reynolds of London, Ont. and Ron of Morden; and 7 grandchildren. The funeral was Oct. 23 at Winkler MB Church, with Neil Block and George Baerg ministering.

Abram John Koop

Abram John Koop passed away Nov. 7. He was born Oct. 31, 1900 to John and Katharine Koop in Alexanderkrone, Molotschna, Ukraine. He married Sara Peters in 1921. They immigrated to a farm in Manitoba in 1925. He gave his life to the Lord at an early age and was baptized, joining the MB Church. Sara died in 1930, leaving him with 3 small children. He married Anna Neufeld in 1931. They moved to Ontario in 1938. They moved to Orchardview Apartments in 1982, then to United Mennonite Home, both in Vineland, Ont. Anna died Dec. 8, 1995. Predeceased by Sara and Anna, 2 great-granddaughters,1 brother and 1 sister, he is mourned by children John of Comox, B.C., Walt of Vineland, Martha Bartel of Leamington, Ont., Bill of Wellandport, Ont., Vic of Winkler, Man., Anne Hamm of Campden, Ont., Erna Durksen of Breslau, Ont., Abe of St. Catharines, Ont., Kathy Enns of Winnipeg, Betty Isaak of Oakville, Ont. and Vera Sinclair of Burlington, Ont.; 35 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 1 brother. The funeral was Nov. 11 at Vineland MB Church, with Henry Wiebe and Helmut Koop ministering.

David Victor Hiebert

David Victor Hiebert passed away Nov. 16 of cancer. He was born Nov. 2, 1922 to David and Mary Hiebert in Steinfeld, Russia. They immigrated to Namaka, Alta. in 1926, moving to Gem, Alta. in 1935. He married Annie Oct. 30, 1949. He was a farmer and rancher all his life. He accepted the Lord in his early 20s. He served in the church as an usher and as business manager. He was an active member in his church and community, always willing to give of his time and resources. He is remembered as a devoted husband and father and a man of honesty and integrity who demonstrated his faith in daily life. He is mourned by Annie; children Dianne Smith of Calgary, Doreen Quapp of Calgary, Laurence of Japan, Richard of Gem and Lynette Dyck of Airdrie, Alta.; 7 grandchildren; 5 sisters and 3 brothers. The funeral was Nov. 20 at Gem MB Church, with Phil Born and A.M. Rempel ministering.

Helen Pauls

Helen Pauls passed away Nov. 22. She was born Jan. 1, 1927 to Nicolai and Katherine Voth in Hochfeld, Man. The family moved to Arnaud, Man. in 1932. She was baptized Aug. 12, 1945. She attended Winkler Bible School and graduated from nurse's training in Steinbach, Man. in 1950. She nursed in Norway House, Man. and Manitou, Man. for over 30 years. She married Cornelius Pauls Oct. 24, 1953. They joined Manitou MB Church Dec. 7, 1954. They farmed near Manitou until retiring to Morden, Man. in 1992. She had a strong faith which she passed on to her children. She interceded often for her family and friends. She took great pride in gardening and nurturing her many flowers. She loved to watch her hummingbirds. She found beauty all around her. Predeceased by 3 brothers, she is mourned by Cornelius; children Sylvia Martin of Roland, Man., Joan Mulligan of Swift Current, Sask., son Robert of Winnipeg; 5 grandchildren; 5 sisters and 3 brothers. The funeral was Nov. 25 at Westside Community Church, Morden, with Russ Toews, George Toews and Herman Voth ministering.

Frank George Berg

Frank George Berg passed away Nov. 22. He was born in 1913 in Kansas. Three weeks later, the family immigrated to Saskatchewan on a cattle train. He chose to follow Jesus as a teen with his mother's encouragement. He cherished Ps. 103:12. He married Katie Huebert Oct. 30, 1941. They farmed near Hepburn, Sask. until moving to Coaldale, Alta. in 1974. He spent much time making things, fixing things and making do with less. He loved open spaces, sunsets, animals and collecting rocks. He was known as a poet, public speaker and humorist. He cherished family relationships. His faith in God and his sense of responsibility to his family were central to his life. He loved to read and thought and felt deeply about many things. He is mourned by Katie; children Gilbert of Winnipeg, Merrill Unger of Brandon, Harley and Dorothy Hubert, both of Coaldale; 16 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 1 brother and 3 sisters. The funeral was Nov. 25 at Coaldale MB Church, with Rudy Heidebrecht ministering.

Henry J. Penner

Henry J. Penner passed away Nov. 16. He was born Oct. 24, 1912 in Russia. The family immigrated to Canada in 1926. He put his faith in Jesus as a youth and was baptized, joining the MB Church. He married Annie Wiebe July 12, 1936. He farmed until 1966, when he began work at Eden Mental Health Centre in Winkler, Man. He was often involved in the activities of church and community. He is remembered for his love, caring attitude and integrity. He is mourned by Annie; children Velma Dyck, Marilyn Braun, Jenny Regehr, Julia Zook; 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. The funeral was Nov. 20 at Winkler MB Church, with Neil Block ministering.

Elizabeth Salamon

Elizabeth Salamon passed away Sept. 8 of cancer. She was born Feb. 3, 1939 to John and Katharine Groening in Gouldtown, Sask. She committed her life to the Lord as a teen. She married Lajos Salamon Aug. 1, 1964. She was diagnosed with cancer in January, 1991. She was baptized at Central Heights MB Church in Abbotsford, B.C. Feb. 13, 1994. She worked for Fraser Valley Flyer service for the past several years. The cancer went into remission but returned in spring, 1996. She is mourned by Lajos; daughter Louise and son Jim. The funeral was Sept. 11 at Central Heights MB Church, with Pete Unrau ministering.

David D. Fehr

David D. Fehr of Waldheim, Sask. passed away Nov. 30. He was born Oct. 19, 1916 to David and Elizabeth Fehr in Rosthern, Sask. He surrendered his life to Christ as a young man under the leadership of C.N. Hiebert, was baptized and joined Brotherfield MB Church. He graduated from Hepburn (Sask.) Bible School and was active in ministering in a quartet. Singing was special to him; he sang in the Golden Age Choir of Waldheim for several years. He loved to study and read, especially Bible and theology books. He was a deep thinker, knew what he believed and why. He was always ready to share his faith. He enjoyed his daily trips to the coffee shop to be with friends. He served in the medical corps in World War II. He worked for 11 years as a guard at the RCMP station in Fort St. John, B.C. prior to retirement. Predeceased by son Larry in 1994, 2 brothers and 3 sisters, he is mourned by Anne; son Brian; daughter Lois Millsap; 6 grandchildren; 5 sisters and 1 brother. The funeral was Dec. 3 at Waldheim MB Church, with Clarence Peters and Otto Derksen ministering.
