Abraham was deeply shaken by the revelation that God would destroy these cities. Lot was on his mind when he cried out, "Will you kill good and bad alike? . . . Should not the Judge of all the earth be fair?" If there were 50 godly people in the city, would God destroy it? The answer was no. What about 45? No, God would not destroy it for the sake of 45 godly people. What bout 40? No. Thirty? No. Suppose there are only 20? No.
Then Abraham said, "Let not the Lord be angry; I will speak but this once more! Suppose only ten are found?" The Lord replied, "Then for the sake of the ten I won't destroy it." End of conversation. The Lord left, and Abraham returned home.
The "burning" question is: Would God have spared Sodom and Gomorrah for the sake of four godly people, if Abraham had continued his prayer?
No one will ever know, at least not in this life. The lesson for us is to persist in prayer at all odds as the Lord Jesus encouraged us to do: "Don't you think that God will surely give justice to His people who plead with Him day and night?" (Luke 18:1-8).
