Reflections on Ephesians 5:1-2: Imitators of God

Eleanore Klassen

"Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you, and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma" (Ephesians 5:1,2, NAS).

My granddaughter Raquel, who is greatly loved by her mommy and daddy, her two grandmas and grandpa, and her uncles and aunts, is an imitator. She seems to hear and see everything, and, at 21 months, she tries to say everything she hears. Sometimes it sounds a little different when she says it, but it is quite clear what she means when she gazes into Grandpa's cup and comments, "Poppa's poffee!"

She has caught little mannerisms like "Um-hum. . . . Yes" from listening to her mommy in phone coversations. Her sentences end with "Right? . . . " just like she hears her daddy say. She is a loved child. She listens to those who love her and imitates them.

We are to be imitators of God in the same way. His love goes far beyond human love, and His Word says we are much loved children. Are we listening to Him and imitating Him? Our example is Christ, who loved us and gave Himself up for us. Are our lives a sacrifice to God and a fragrant aroma to the world?
