Manitoba reviews post-secondary Christian education

Winnipeg, Man.

The report is in. After months of intense study and analysis by a Post-Secondary Higher Education Review Committee, the Manitoba MB Conference Committee of Reference and Counsel (CRC) issued its report and preliminary proposals to the Manitoba "mini-conference" on January 15. The "mini-conference" is a pre-convention meeting of boards, pastors and moderators, which serves as a clearinghouse for business to be brought to the annual Manitoba MB Conference convention.

One of the clearest findings of the Review is the near unanimity which Mennonite Brethren in Manitoba share regarding the need for a biblically-based post-secondary institution of Christian education in which discipleship training (often referred to as faith formation) is a high priority. The report also identified other issues which need to be addressed, and issued a clear call to confession and repentance. It expressed a sincere desire for a fresh visitation from God "to see God do awesome things that we did not expect" (Isaiah 64:1-4).

The proposal presented by CRC explores the possibility of creating a single, multi-track school on one campus, in which discipleship training would be the foundational core. Tracks would include short-term certificates, a two-year diploma, and a three or four-year degree. Biblical/spiritual formation courses, intentional community life and practical ministry opportunities are seen as essential components of each track. Networking with other agencies/institutions/conferences of like mind to share resources and work cooperatively is encouraged.

Subject to the acceptance of such a proposal and the satisfactory negotiation of final details, CRC will recommend that the Manitoba Conference accept, in principle, ownership of Concord College, including the transfer to the Conference of the physical assets related to the College.

Initial response at the mini-conference was generally positive. It must be stressed that this is a proposal-in-process. It is hoped that current discussions among representatives of Winkler Bible Institute, Concord College and CRC will result in a unified vision and cohesive program proposal for presentation to the convention at the end of February. Delegates will then be asked to return to their churches with information for discussion, prayer and fasting. A special Manitoba Conference convention has been called for March 15 for decision-making.

Brothers and sisters, please pray for us.

John H. Unger, moderator, Manitoba MB Conference
