Chapman offers compelling mix: Signs of Life. Steven Curtis Chapman. Sparrow Music, 1996.

Clay Bergen.

I hate country music. Having said that, I believe Steven Curtis Chapman's latest CD is wonderful.

It skillfully combines rock, country, blue-grass and soul in 12 songs that run the gamut of emotion and themes. The first "Lord of the Dance" is impossible not to move something to. But, contrary to the world's view of dance, Chapman's dance is one of praise to his Lord for how He has skillfully choreographed his life.

The next tracks give further meat to this message. The title track, "Signs of Life", speaks about how our world has all the trappings of life, yet is so dead. Chapman's theme is that every moment of our life must exude being in the presence of the Lord. Even when we are trapped by the world around us, Jesus can make us free and alive to what He can do in our lives. When this is true, we as people will be completely alive and there will be no mistaking the signs of life.

Chapman's sensitivity, energy, sincerity and lyrical style are a compelling mix that makes this CD a must-have. 9 out of 10.
