On March 27 the board of Winkler Bible Institute met with the Manitoba Board of Directors and the Committee of Reference and Counsel. After considerable discussion about other viable alternatives, the CRC, acting as conference-in-interim, accepted the recommendation brought by WBI.
The WBI Board indicated that there were few student prospects from the Manitoba MB churches for September, 1997, and that the decision at the special convention on March 15 indicated that the the WBI program had lost the cofidence of more than half the convention delegates. The Board also stated that there were insufficient funds to deliver the WBI program with the level of excellence expected of the school. Although there was talk of partnerships with other schools, this could not be put in place in the amount of time left before the next school year, and, in order to remove any uncertainties, the Board recommended that the school close at the end of the current school year.
In order to facilitate an orderly transition, any present first-year WBI student who enrols in another postsecondary institution for biblical studies in September, 1997, will be eligible for a subsidy of $1200. An adequate severance package will be worked out for each employee of WBI. The campus and facilities will be turned over to the Manitoba MB Conference Board of Directors on August 31, 1997.
