BOOK SHORTS

Jim Coggins

Good adventure novels by Canadian evangelical Christians are rare. Saluso's Game and Avenger (Multnomah Books, 1996 and 1997) by Associated Canadian Theological Schools librarian William Badke are sequels to Badke's first novel The Search. (See review in MB Herald, June 30 1995.) These are not great books, but they are competent, and less simplistic than many Christian novels. The third volume suggests that these are not part of an open-ended series, but a deliberate trilogy. Over three books, one eventually gets a little tried of lead character Ben Sylvester's seemingly endless struggle to give up his own way of doing things and submit to doing things God's way. On the other hand, maybe God gets a little tired of our own repeated failures in this area too!
