Jacob Goerz

Jacob Goerz passed away Jan. 14. He was born Nov. 7. 1909 near the Kuban River in Russia. The family emigrated to Brazil in 1930. He married Katie Goertz in Curitiba, Brazil in 1936. They emigrated to Germany in 1939 in search of a better life. After World War II, the family emigrated to Snowflake, Man. They farmed in the area for many years, retiring to Morden, Man. in 1975. In retirement, his greatest joys included family, church, friends and a weekly round of golf, even into his 80s. He remained an active member of Westside Community Church in Morden, serving in various capacities. Predeceased by 14 siblings, he is mourned by Katie; children Dietmar of Morden, Helga Guenter of Winnipeg, Harry of Williams Lake, B.C., Eckhard of Winnipeg, Ingrid Friesen and Anne Janzen of Morden, and Paul of Winnipeg; 18 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and twin sister Ida of Brazil. The funeral was Jan. 19 at Westside Community Church, with Russ Toews ministering.

Louise Warkentin

Louise Warkentin passed away Apr. 5. She was born Aug. 29, 1920 to Henry and Margaret Thiessen in Russia. The family immigrated to Canada when she was 5. They lived in Hanley, Sask., then Hepburn, Sask. She attended Hepburn Bible School. She married Henry Neufeld July 10, 1941. They lived in several other small communities before moving to Saskatoon in 1960. She worked in several retail stores. She was an avid gardener and home decorator. Her back yard was like a park. Her home was a display of her handiwork: paintings, crocheting, knitting, flower arrangements and sewing. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends with cooking and baking. They went on many family trips and, in later years, she enjoyed trips to Europe, Hawaii, Florida, Arizona, Minnesota, New York, the Maritimes, Alaska, B.C. and Germany. In 1988, her mother and husband died. She suffered great loneliness. She married Bill Warkentin in 1990 and found renewed happiness. They enjoyed companionship, travel and involvement with many friends in the seniors' group at church. Despite health problems over the last few years, she endeavoured to live life to the full. Predeceased by first husband Henry, she is mourned by Bill; daughters Jeanette McLeod, Edie Bowes and Denise Backman; 7 grandchildren; and 1 brother. The funeral was Apr. 8 at Forest Grove Community Church, Saskatoon, with Carl Ens and Rueben Baerg ministering.

Heinrich Wiens

Heinrich Wiens passed away Feb. 10. He was born Oct. 24, 1941 to Franz and Maria Wiens in Gnadenheim, Fernheim, Paraguay. He accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized, joining the Mennonite Church in Fernheim. He immigrated to Vancouver, B.C. in 1962. He later joined First United Mennonite Church in Vancouver, where he enjoyed being active in church work. He married Elvira Kopper Feb. 8, 1969. He enjoyed good health all his life until he suffered a severe stroke Feb. 7. He is remembered as a kind and faithful man who took his responsibilities seriously. Predeceased by 3 siblings, he is mourned by Elvira; children Sandy, Brenda, Victor and Conny; 2 sisters and 3 brothers. The funeral was Feb. 14 at Culloden MB Church, Vancouver, with Hans Wall and Aldon Loeppky ministering.
