CCP announces awards

Winnipeg

The Canadian Church Press, an association of church-related publications in Canada, recently announced their awards of merit for material published in 1996.

An article about a troubled marriage, and one about a homeless man, shared the top writing award, the A.C. Forrest Memorial Award.

"The Life and Death of Irwin Anderson" by David Wilson, published in The United Church Observer, told the story about a homeless man who froze to death. The judge wrote, "it reveals the complex chain of life events that can lead to a person ending up on the street". "Broken Vows: The Death & Resurrection of a Marriage", anonymously written in the first person, told the story about how spousal abuse wrecked a marriage. It then explains how the couple sought counselling and stayed together. It was published in the Presbyterian Record.

The "general excellence" awards went to the Canada Lutheran (denominational/inter-denominational/general magazines), Grail, An Ecumenical Journal (specialized magazines and journals), Christian Week (newspapers - national publications) and Catholic Times Montreal (newspapers - regional publications).

Mennonite Brethren Herald received two honourable mention awards this year. One was for the article, "Answered Prayer" by Ron Carleton (theological reflection - doctrinal) which appeared in the Nov. 22, 1996 issue. The other honourable mention award went to layout and design artist Fred Koop for the Mar. 8, 1996 cover called "MBs in Cyberspace" (front cover - 1,2 or 3 colour). The cover featured an illustration of Menno Simons sitting in front of a computer. The cover design replicated a computer screen layout.

Faith Today, an interdenominational national magazine produced by the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada received the most awards (nine, including three first prizes), followed by the Presbyterian Record with six awards (including one first prize).
