CURRENTLY IN TELEVISION

Always vigilant

KATHLEEN KLASSEN

Jake and the Kid (Saturday nights on CTV) is a family show set in a tiny prairie town called Crocus. Jake is a hired man who works for a woman widowed by World War II. Her son spends a lot of time with Jake, and the show is primarily based on their adventures. Of course, the show attempts to be Apolitically correct@ and includes strong female and ethnic roles--even though these roles were most likely not prevalent in small prairie towns 50 years ago.

The show is entertaining and somewhat Aold fashioned@, and gives a bit of a break from the harshness prevalent in most programming. We have enjoyed watching it with our children. However, as with any television programming, you have to always be vigilant and watch for philosophies that may not be in line with Scripture. You will always find something in secular programming that may not be suitable. For this reason, we have chosen not to watch certain episodes.
