A reflection on the cross

by John F. Wiebe

Have you noticed how the grain of the wood tells the story of the cross?

Can you see how the blood has trickled down to the base of the cross, forming ripples as it crusts and dries in the desert heat?

As you move up the cross, can you see the large hole in His feet, stretched into an oval by Jesus' weight against the nails?

See how the twisted grain depicts the tortured and beaten legs, exhausted to the point where they can no longer support His weight.

See the large gash in His side where the soldier's spear has opened His flesh.

See how the grain depicts His stretched rib cage, as His own weight works to pull Him apart.

See the intersection of the cross where his bowed head hangs, blackened by the bruises, the blood, the isolation and despair, as He carries our sins.

See how the wood's grain forms the shape of flames above His head, as He is carried to heaven, bringing hope and victory over isolation, loneliness, pain and suffering.
