Columbia graduates 96

ABBOTSFORD, B.C.

Columbia Bible College ended its school year April 17-18 with a weekend of celebration. Friday evening's Spring Concert drew well over 1000 people. Under the direction of Tony Funk, the Columbia Concert Choir offered several selections, followed by the College Oratorio Choir and Orchestra's performance of the modern oratorio, Saviour. Joining the 130-voice choir were soloists Crystal Hicks, mezzo soprano; Colin Balzer, Ray Harris and Lonnie Delyle, tenors; and George Roberts, baritone. The audience was deeply moved, especially by such selections as "My Heart Belongs to You" and "Cross of Love".

Besides honouring 96 graduates, Saturday's ceremonies gave special recognition to two faculty members leaving the College. Columbia's Director of Athletics and Recreation Bruce Enns gave the commencement address on the topic of leadership. Enns was a model of servant leadership in his ten years at Columbia.

Outgoing Student Dean Garth Klassen was honoured as an Outstanding Alumnus. After graduating from Columbia's three-year program in 1978, he went on to further studies and effective ministry in teaching and pastoring. President Walter Unger told Klassen, "In the 20 years since you graduated from Columbia, you have exhibited the qualities the College seeks to nurture in its graduates--consistent Christian living, a strong family life, involvement in church and community, and a spirit of servanthood."

Barton Priebe, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in mission, gave a dynamic valeditory address, challenging his fellow graduates and the audience with the urgency of serving Christ in light of His soon return. Maranda Naylor, also a B.A. graduate in mission, received the award for Academic Excellence. -- Elly Bargen
