The portrayal of Christians
John Feakes

On television, with increasing frequency, Christians are being portrayed as hypocrites, fanatics, bigots and losers. The message to the viewing audience is this: A Christian is not someone you want to be or be around. Here are some recent examples:

Seinfeld: Main character Elaine is listening to her car stereo, enjoying the music, when she suddenly realizes that the song she's been enjoying is proclaiming Jesus. She turns the radio off in disgust and utters a swear word. This takes place amid laughter from the audience.

Mad TV: A woman, who appears quite normal, receives hysterical audience laughter after she states that she has received Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour.

Chicago Hope: A featured cast member seriously questions her father's mental health because he regularly spends time "talking to God". In other words, praying is now a sign of mental illness.

The devil himself is sowing seeds of hatred toward Christians, and television has become a fertile ground for this.

John Feakes is a member of North Kildonan MB Church in Winnipeg, Man.
