Wingender replaces Jean-Raymond Théorêt, who has served as president of IBL for the last sixteen years. Théorêt will remain at the school and will take over the position of registrar, the position that Wingender held for the past two years.
Wingender taught science in French-speaking public high schools in St-Théorêt and St-Eustache 1990-1997. He was pastor of St-Rose MB Church 1988-1990 and worked for Agriculture Canada 1981-1985. He served on the Board of MBMS 1992-1993, and he is currently a member of both the Quebec and Canadian boards of Faith and Life.
Wingender holds a B.A. in applied science from the Université Laval in Qubec City, an M.Div. in pastoral ministry from MB Biblical Seminary, Fresno and a teaching degree from Université du Québec à Montréal. Wingender and his wife Paulette Taylor have three sons, Jean-François, 10, Sydney, 9, and Spencer, 6.
Wingender says his acceptance of the presidency stems from his firm belief that God is calling the Mennonite Brethren Church to impact the evangelical community in Quebec through the ministry of biblical and theological education. "The evangelical church in Québec is in danger," he says. He goes on to say, "It has failed to impact our society the way it ought to have impacted it. To turn it around, our leaders need to be equipped to think both biblically and creatively about the particular challenges our culture presents. I believe this is exactly what IBL is striving to achieve and I feel privileged to be part of this venture and to help it grow and develop even farther."
