Reflections on Mark 13:32-33

Great Expectations

Not long ago, my five-year-old came to me and asked, "When can we go to heaven?" I wasn't sure what she meant. I asked her if she wanted to go, and she answered, "Yes, Why can't we go today?"

Children take what we teach and incorporate it into their lives. My daughter has heard about heaven and that someday Jesus will come to take us to be with Him there. She has decided that if it is a good place to go to, and so wondered: If heaven is so wonderful, why are we waiting? Why can' we go now?

Often we find our lives hurried and full of activities. We don't seem to have the time (or don't make the time) to stop and reflect about what we have learned. My daughter's questions caused me to think about heaven, too. I had to ask: How often do I think about heaven with the expectation that I could be going there at any time? Do I think that it's such a wonderful place that I can hardly wait for the day that Jesus will return for me? We adults can learn from children. We need to regain the anticipation that a young child has for an upcoming event, and wait with expectation for Christ's return.
