A new program under the direction of MB Missions and Services International will allow Bible and theology professors from Canada and the US to visit overseas MB Bible schools. The program is part of ongoing efforts to support leadership training in partner MB conferences through MBMS International.
Under the new initiative, professors will serve overseas for full semesters of 16 weeks, or for modular terms of three or more weeks. The schedule will allow Western teachers to complete terms in their own schools while still having opportunity to contribute to overseas institutions.
According to Harold Ens, general director of MBMS International, the program promotes greater interaction between the global family of the Mennonite Brethren. "This is a wonderful way for our MB schools around the world to learn from each other," he said.
Elmer Martens has been appointed to the position of Facilitator of International Teacher Exchange. Martens is Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno, Calif. He said, "After each of my three visits to India, I have been burdened with the issue of teaching resources for the MB schools there."
Martens was prompted to accept the appointment when E.D. Solomon, New Testament professor at MB Centenary Bible College in Shamshabad, India, spoke of the urgent need for resourcing in the field of Bible and theology during a visit to Canada and the US in May and June. (See MBH Aug. 28.)
"Interaction of teachers from different countries can provide tremendous enrichment to all involved," said Martens. "While the initial traffic may be from North America to overseas schools, we hope North American MB institutions will invite teachers from overseas as well, possibly with the cooperation of the International Committee of Mennonite Brethren."
Professors or their North American schools will be responsible to raise funds for transportation and other travel costs. It is anticipated that lodging and food will be provided by the host institution. MBMS International will support the initiative by processing funds raised by participants and provide tax-deductible receipts. In some cases, MBMS International may also provide limited financial assistance.--Brad Thiessen, MBMS International
