More than 400 people, church leaders and the mayors of Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe, N.B. came together Sept. 18 for a mayor's prayer breakfast at the Hotel Beausejour in Moncton. Organized by an interdenominational committee, the group gathered to pray for guidance and wisdom for the mayors.
The chair of the committee was pastor Walter Justice of River of Life MB Church in Riverview. Originally from the southern US, Justice said prayer breakfasts for elected officials are common in many North American cities, the most famous held by the President of the United States each year.
"The purpose of the event is to recognize our community leadership and encourage them through a public support," Justice said. "We do believe that prayer makes a difference. It's been a passion of mine and a vision of mine to have something like this. It does help the churches."
The gesture was appreciated by the three mayors of the tri-city area, who participated in the breakfast by reading biblical passages and by praying.
Justice has been living in Metro Moncton for the past three years and he said he was pleased to finally be able to have this event take place. He added that many churches in the area felt it is important to support the municipal leadership in the three communities.
The last mayor's prayer breakfast held in Metro Moncton was in 1979.--from reports by The Times & Transcript
