One mother was checking her gift list when she saw her child gazing at something near the toy display. "What are you going to beg for now?" was her harried comment. Tiredness sounded in her voice. Her eyes rolled in exasperation. "I'm already rushing enough without searching for still another toy!"
"Not a toy, Mama," the child's small voice replied. He reached up and touched the mother's hand. "Hold my hand like that Mama's holding her boy's?"
The mother bit her lip and gazed at her son. She grabbed his hand and smiled. "Of course!"
He grinned up at her with shining eyes. "I feel better now."
Seeing this, it came to mind that the most precious gift to our children is our love. In today's busy world, it is easy to sometimes forget that. Presents are admired and evoke smiles and handclaps. But that parental smile, kind word, special time spent, story, walk and assurance that we care are precious gifts money cannot buy.
