It's a Saturday morning in September, and all three children are with me. As I proceed through a green light, there is a blur from the left. I slam the brakes and swerve right. A crumpled front corner destines our car to an auto graveyard. My daughter Shannon suggests taking a picture of the car, and I say "Yes, it would be a good reminder of God's protection over us."
In Joshua 4, God did a miraculous thing for the Israelites. It was harvest season, with waters at flood levels yet the Israelites walked through the Jordan River on dry land, with a mountain of water on the right and a dry riverbed on the left. God then commanded the construction of a memorial:
"Let this be a sign among you, so that when your children ask later. . . ."
When I pick up Shannon from school, she asks if I took the picture. "No. I'm sorry," I reply, as guilt comes over me. It had been a busy day, and photography was the last thing on my mind.
It's a family night, year 2010. Someone picks up a photo album, and we drift into a sentimental journey childhood memories, Christmas holidays, vacations, etc. No one asks, "Dad, why did you take a picture of a wrecked car?" I am unable to reply, "God works in our lives, and on a Saturday morning in September. . . ."
