Marvin Schmidt served as interim pastor at Saanich (B.C.) Community Church near Victoria, while Doug and Naomi Enns were on a sabbatical from October to February. Doug spent some time studying at MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno, Calif., visiting churches and travelling. Marvin and his wife Eunice have been members of the church for about two years. Previously, he pastored South Langley MB Church in Langley, B.C. for nine years, pastored 10 years in Edmonton, five years in Red Deer, Alta. and 15 years in Minnesota and Kansas. He has a B.A. from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Okla. and an M.A. from MB Biblical Seminary, Fresno, Calif. The Schmidts live on Pender Island, B.C., taking the ferry every Sunday to go to church. Marvin's ministry included preaching and visitation. Other aspects of ministry were carried out by administrative assistant Bobbi Jo Fraser, council member Garry Wickett and church member Carolyn Fast. The Schmidts have three grown children and four grandchildren. After his term is over, Marvin, who doesn't like the word "retire", plans to continue preaching and writing.
Bob and Anne Loewen were affirmed as visitation and 50 and over pastoral couple in Neighbourhood Church, Nanaimo, B.C., effective Dec. 27. They have been serving unofficially in this capacity for over a year. He recently retired from operating a book store and Anne retired from teaching. Until May 1998, Bob was serving the church as moderator; he has also taught Sunday school and has led clubs and care groups. They are founding members of the church. Bob has studied at Bethel College, North Newton, Kan., and University of Manitoba and has an M.A. from Minot State College, N.D. The Loewens also served in Japan under Mennonite Board of Missions 1969-72. They have two grown children and five grandchildren.
Lee Francois was called to be college and career pastor at Willingdon Church, Burnaby, B.C., on Aug. 15. He and his wife Ilona have been members of the church for over 11 years. Lee has a B.A. in theology from Briercrest Bible School, Caronport, Sask., and a Masters of Christian Studies from Regent College, Vancouver. He replaces Ron Friesen, who accepted a call to pastor at Forest Grove Community Church in Saskatoon. Daryl Kroeker, pastor for ministry development in Willingdon Church, Burnaby, B.C., has expanded his ministry to include providing pastoral administrative support. Meanwhile, John Wiens and his wife Ev have switched to serving as pastor of family ministries in the areas of marriage preparation, prayer counselling, recovery, and marriage and family enrichment.
