Praying for your child's future spouse

Al Menconi

A few years ago, Wayne Watson recorded a song called, "Somewhere in the World". In that song, he prays that his two sons will grow up to be godly men, and then he prays that his sons' future wives will grow up to be godly women. Somewhere in the world, there's a little girl just for his son, and he implores her to "hold on to Jesus".

Ever since I heard that song, I have been praying for both of my daughters' future husbands. I want my girls to have godly husbands when they marry, and those young men are making decisions right now that will affect the rest of their lives.

Some parents fear that praying for their children's future spouses will encourage their children to look for romance at too early an age. I can certainly relate to that concern. (My personal goal was to delay my daughters' dating until they were 37. My wife thought that letting them date at 16 was a more reasonable compromise.) Yet, it's never too early to start praying that your children will grow up to be godly men and women who will marry godly women and men.

I don't pray that either of my daughters' husbands will be handsome or rich. I pray that they will be spiritually strong and morally pure. I pray that my daughters and their future husbands will challenge each other to become people for God.

I pray like this for two reasons. The first is that I want my daughters to know that I care about their lives--today and tomorrow. The other reason is that prayer works. Somewhere in the world, a young man is making decisions right now that will affect him and my daughter for the rest of their lives. I pray that he will hold onto Jesus and make the right choices to grow into a godly man.
