Concord College names new president

WINNIPEG

The Board of Concord College has appointed John H. Unger as president of Concord College effective July 1, to lead the college as it enters the new millennium in the Mennonite College Federation.

Unger, a leader, speaker and Bible teacher, has been pastor of Richmond Park MB Church in Brandon, Man. for the last ten years, and previously was associate pastor of Clearbrook (B.C.) MB Church for six years. He began his public work as an engineer after graduating in agricultural engineering from the University of Saskatchewan. He then returned to southern Alberta to participate in the formation of a family farm business. He and his wife Merrill graduated from Bethany Bible Institute in Hepburn, Sask., and from MB Biblical Seminary in Fresno, Calif.

Though he has not pursued an academic career, Unger's seminary mentors describe him as one of the school's outstanding graduates. While serving as Manitoba MB Conference moderator, he helped the Conference process the closure of Winkler Bible Institute and facilitated the acquisition of Concord College by the Conference and its approval for participation in Mennonite College Federation.

For two years, Merrill served as chaplain at Brandon University, and more recently has been a part of a counselling group known as the Westman Interfaith Counselling and Education Centre. The Ungers have four children, two of them married. Two have been students at Concord College. Daughter Heather is currently studying at Concord and was part of the Lithuania Christian College exchange program. Board of Concord College release
