SEED Winnipeg, a business and job creation service of Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba, will receive $600,000 in government funding. The funding, announced Jan. 29, will help the non-profit organization expand its job creation program in Winnipeg's inner city communities.
The funding will come mainly from the Canada/Manitoba Economic Development Partnership Agreement. As well, Western Economic Diversification Canada and the Manitoba Native Affairs Secretariat are each contributing $75,000.
SEED Winnipeg stands for "Supporting Employment and Economic Development", and was established five years ago by MCC Manitoba. Since then, MCC Manitoba has assisted more than 180 businesses and helped create employment for more than 250 people in the city's inner core area. The organization's mandate is to combat poverty and help renew inner city communities by providing services that assist low-income people to become financially self-supporting.
SEED Winnipeg offers services in small business management, business planning and preparation to low income individuals and communities. As well, SEED provides access to loans of up to $10,000 and after-consulting service. To date, SEED Winnipeg has disbursed over $500,000 in loans to individuals and businesses.
New services offered through SEED will include cooperative enterprises; succession planning for local businesses owned by aging people; and a hiring program to identify and match local skilled people with local businesses.MCC Manitoba release
