Reflections on John 7:37

Lessons from a primula

What a lovely surprise when our youngest daughter brought us a primula plant. How we enjoyed the large gold, white-centred flowers surrounded by bright green leaves!

One evening, I noticed the plant was droopy. I placed it in the kitchen sink and next morning poured clean, clear water into the plant again and again. About an hour later, my husband remarked, "Look at that beautiful plant. It has recovered completely."

Here was a vivid object lesson! How often do our spirits feel somewhat droopy. Sometimes it's difficult to pinpoint the cause. Is it overwhelming duties that crowd the hours of the day? Or the glaring headlines in the daily newspaper? A disappointment? An illness? A misunderstanding? A financial challenge?

Where should we go? What should we do? The answer is: Go to the Lord and drink deeply from His living Word. John 7:37 tells us that Jesus cried out, "If a man [or woman] is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink." Here, in a quiet time with the Lord, the spirit is revived and blessed. Jeremiah 15:16 says, "When Your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart's delight".
