Groups launch covenant marriage movement

NEW YORK, N.Y.

The Covenant Marriage Movement is an initiative of two dozen organizations to strengthen marriage in the US in the wake of rampant divorce. Couples will be asked to sign this statement: "Believing that marriage is a covenant, intended by God to be a lifetime relationship between a man and a woman, we vow to God, each other, our families and our communities to remain steadfast in unconditional love, reconciliation and sexual purity while purposely growing in our covenant marriage relationship."

Organizations cooperating with this initiative are the American Association of Christian Counselors, Assemblies of God, the Center for Marriage and Family Studies, Christian Men's Network, Covenant Keepers, Family Life, Family Foundations International, FOCCUS Inc., Focus on the Family, Intimate Life Ministries, Jack Hayford Ministries, Journey to Intimacy, LafeWay Christian Resources, Marriage Ministries International, Marriage Plus Ministries, Marriage Savers, Moody Bible Institute, National Association of Marriage Enhancement, Promise Keepers, Smalley Relationship Center, Southern Baptist Association of Counseling and Family Ministry, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Department of Pastoral Care and Counseling, and Your Ministry Counseling Services.

The governments of Louisiana and Arizona have passed covenant marriage laws, allowing marrying couples to choose a more binding marriage covenant than the typical marriage commitment that can be easily ended with a no-fault divorce. Other states are considering similar laws.
