Intergenerational Ministry
Celebrating Advent with Chrismons

The Flin Flon MB Church created an advent series that goes beyond lighting candles. It was a children’s feature that made Advent an intergenerational occasion.

Each week every child who came to worship received a ‘Chrismon’ from the usher. Chrismons are monograms or pictures of Christ and the message of Christmas.

Each service had common elements. Call to Worship (read from the back of the sanctuary); following this the congregation would sing verse one of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel as the children were invited to come to the front of the sanctuary; then Chrissy the Christmas Butterfly appeared, explaining about herself, the Chrismons and how everything relates to Christ; and as the congregation sang the children would hang their Chrismons on the tree.

Week One:

Call to Worship: Isaiah 9:7
Chrismon: Butterfly

Chrissy introduces herself and explains how she is a miracle of new life and reminds the congregation how they too can have a beautiful, colourful, free life in Christ!

Week Two:

Call to Worship: Isaiah 40:1-5, 41:13
Chrismon: Circle ring with a triangle inside

Chrissy shares her age with everyone and finds out who is the oldest in the congregation. She then explains eternity and how this week’s Chrismon has no beginning or end, and how the triangle symbolizes the Trinity.

Week Three:

Call to Worship: John 1:1-5, 8:12
Chrismon: Sun

Chrissy comes in singing Heavenly Sunshine and gets the congregation to join in. She then encourages the children to think about the sun and how it warms us and creates light in our lives just as Christ does.

Week Four:

Call to Worship: Luke 1:26-33
Chrismon: Crowns

Chrissy talks about Christ as King and how we must honour Him.

Week Five (Christmas Eve):

Call to Worship: Luke 2, Matthew 2
Chrismon: Star

Chrissy comes in singing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. She explains how God first guided people to baby Jesus by a star and how He will still, today, guide us and show us how to live in Him.
